Positive Directions–The Center for Prevention and Counseling seeks a part-time Peer Support Specialist for the CT Support Group project. The project’s goal is to provide connection, peer support, and community-building opportunities to teens and young adults through online platforms. The project also provides information via a website containing a Q&A guide, resource map, personal stories, and media; podcasts; and social media platforms including Discord. CT Support Group’s content is designed, developed & managed by Connecticut-based young people with personal experience &/or interest in mental health, substance use, and other challenges.

Young adults who are certified as peer support specialists (Recovery Support Specialists, Recovery Coaches) are strongly encouraged to apply. Occasional weekend or evening events. Some travel required.

Summary of Position:

The CT Support Group Peer Support Specialist uses their lived experience with mental health and/or substance use, in conjunction with peer support training, to support other young people in CT. The position reports to the CT Support Group Project Manager.

Specific Responsibilities:

This role seeks to support and engage peers around the state and within the team:

  1. Provide online and in-person peer support to Connecticut teens and young adults, which may include one-on-one or group meetings provided directly through the project;
  2. Support CT teens and young adults in connecting with peer support and other resources;
  3. Serve as a moderator of the Discord server including attending/co-facilitating monthly online drop-in events hosted by the project;
  4. Contribute weekly content such as blog posts, social media posts, podcasts, videos, etc.
  5. Participate in weekly team meetings;
  6. Participate in quarterly Advisory Board meetings;
  7. Represent the project at occasional campus/community events as part of the team;
  8. Engage in continuing education to grow their skills and maintain their certification.

Requirements:

  • Identify as a peer to youth/young adults with lived experience with mental illness and/or substance misuse
  • Trained as Recovery Support Specialist or Recovery Coach
  • Strong personal interest in advocacy
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Additional Information:

  • Schedule: 10-20 hours per week
  • Pay: $21/hour
  • Location: Mostly virtual
