This year on International Day of Friendship, I’m reflecting on all the ways my friends have enriched my life. I’m so lucky to have folks who will show up and pour into me in celebration, in hard times, and all of the space between. Over the last few years, I’ve prioritized and embraced friendship in ways I haven’t before. It’s changed a lot for me. My life feels more full and more rich – and for that I am so grateful.
This year has been one of a lot of changes, and every step of the way, my friends were there. Whether it was to help me pack when I was moving, celebrating together, weekly meditation/mindfulness hangouts, or going to a weekend market, my friends have shown up for me so, so well this year. We’ve supported each other through some really tough experiences – grief and loss, breakups, moving, medical appointments, work and school stress, the list goes on.
Being friends with someone is a responsibility I take really seriously. In a culture that deprioritizes friendships and emphasizes romantic connections, this feels really radical. My friends are incredibly precious to me. It’s important that I show up in ways that make them feel seen and appreciated. I choose to reject the idea of “low maintenance” relationships. I wholeheartedly believe that my friends deserve more than a phone call or text every now and then.
As the summer starts to wind down, my goal remains to pour into my friendships. More everyday invitations, more handwritten notes, more meals & laughs together. What are some ways you’d like to tend to your friendships?
