How To Beat Holiday Blues

Hello everyone, this is my first blog post. Today I’ve decided to write about something everyone or maybe some people may be familiar with. This topic I wanted to write about is holiday loneliness, whether you’re far away from home or at college, or even uninvited. The holidays can be really lonely for some people who don’t have family to go back to. So here are a couple of tips I followed to have some support during the rough times of the holidays.

1. Hang Out With Friends

While this was the first Easter I wasn’t with my family, my friends came in to save the day. To occupy the time I didn’t have with my family, my friends and I spent the holidays together we dyed eggs, played catan, and then made some easter themed food. Spending time with someone, even if isn’t your family can help take your mind off the holiday loneliness and fill your time with joy and support.

2. Prioritize You

I know I’m awful at prioritizing myself but overworking yourself will only cause more damage in the long run at a time like this. Try taking some time to reflect and leave some time in the day for self-care. You are the most important thing in this moment, sit with your feelings and if you can release them in a way that’s healthy. Bottling them inside isn’t good in the long run and risks them emerging in a much worse way. I always find that taking the day off and leaving the day to take a long shower or getting a pedicure, making yourself feel deserving and worthy makes for a day without the blues.

3. Healthy Distractions

I know my campus has plenty of beautiful scenery, take some time to immerse yourself in a walk. If the sidewalk is too bumpy or non-existent, immerse yourself in a new art project, or play that video game that’s been sitting in your library. There’s plenty of different things you can do as a healthy distraction to take your mind off the day. When I have spare time like this, I try to get back into painting and artwork. Any spare time is a great time to start something new to get your mind off of these times.
