Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino/a communities. For me, it is personal: I am proud of my Puerto Rican and Colombian roots. I carry that pride in the music, food, family traditions, language, resilience, and warmth that have shaped who I am.

At the same time, being Hispanic or Latino/a is not one single experience. Our communities include many countries, races, languages, traditions, family structures, and stories. Some people speak Spanish every day, some understand it more than they speak it, and some may not speak it at all. Some people feel closely connected to their culture, while others may be exploring their identity or reconnecting with parts of their heritage. Every experience is valid!

As a peer support specialist, I know how meaningful it can be to speak with someone who understands your language and parts of your cultural experience. I am able to offer peer support in Spanish and provide a welcoming space for people who may feel more comfortable expressing themselves in their first language. Asking for support can look like a way to care for yourself and build connection.

Community-based organizations creating space for healing, culture, wellness, and connection:

This month and every day, may we celebrate Hispanic heritage while honoring the many ways our communities show strength, care, and resilience. Everyone is welcome to learn, connect, uplift one another, and get involved in creating more supportive, inclusive spaces for all!
